Chapter 1

Father’s Discipline

Darkness descended. Rain drizzled down the hood of Ren’s weary cloak. Water dripped from leaves, sounding an angry pitter-patter. He squinted to make out the gray castle through the fog and sweeping rain. He drew his sword while kneeling at the edge of a slow moving river. His eyes locked onto the distant guards. He tensed at every movement they made. For him, the castle captured the very symbol of harassment. Ren gritted his teeth. King Victor, he thought, a murderer, a thief, and a persecutor.

Doubt coiled in Ren’s mind; he knew his plan lacked preparation. He’d simply grabbed his things and hurried to danger. Nervous, he took a deep breath and pushed out the thought of capture.

The river danced with an army of raindrops. With his cloak spread across the grass, he looked like a large stone. The bottom of the cloak lay just inside the passing water, his brown boots stopped before the cold edge. He clutched the handle of his rusty blade, tighter and tighter. Squeezing, his gloves creaked with sounds of wet leather. The sword wasn’t much, just the only one he could get a hold of. He also counted on his secret, an ability lending great aid over the years. Still, he wondered at the power; what limitations did he have? Should he fear it?

He shook his head. Duty pressed him. Prepared not to fail the rightful king of Castle Reinhold, Ren waited for his signal to cross the well-guarded field, and make his way over the wall. He hoped the insider, beautiful and deceptive, did her job. She promised to lure the guards away and light a candle at the turret’s window.

Ren’s black hair and dark eyes framed his ever-tightening scowl. Jocelyn better light that candle soon. I’m not waiting out here forever, guards or no guards. I don’t care if she is royalty. I don’t care if she is beautiful.

The sun disappeared behind the castle walls; a shiver ran down his body. Night covered the land. He felt the cold talons sink into his torso. Every time night fell, meant another day Victor got away with ruling the kingdom. He hated the thought. He considered that by tomorrow the tax collectors would come out for what they presumed theirs, and not just for money, they would come to harass, torment, and belittle the people of Elexarvia, at least anyone who didn’t pay their dues.

There it is. The signal. A tiny flame rose in the window.

He readied himself to hop from stone to stone across the river. He brushed back his hand-length black hair. He ran his eyes up and down the water, trying to find the perfect set of rocks to navigate. Eyeing three stones, he decided it the best crossing point to lead him to the other side near the retaining wall. He took a few steps back, gathered a deep breath, and sprinted. He
